With some projects, I undertake the photography myself (the Photo gallery shows a selection of my photographs, and more of my photographs from various parts of the world can be seen on my Flickr site). I am experienced at providing briefs and art direction for photographers, and when photographs need to be commissioned, I can recommend photographers for particular subjects.

Photographs provided by a client or author sometimes include valuable images that are old, damaged or of poor technical quality. I am skilled at electronic retouching, repairing and tinting, as well as in photomontage techniques, and can often get excellent results from unpromising material.

Words and images

Words and imagesEffective visual communication depends on creating a good relationship between words and images. A picture can be worth a page of prose, but a contradictory message in a photograph, or the wrong word in a caption, can undermine your project. In the role of picture editor, I watch both for the ways that images can complement text, and for the traps.

Whether or not a text is illustrated, a leaden chunk of jargon where plain English is needed, a grammatical error, or a phrase that unintentionally alienates an intended reader can all damage a client’s reputation for quality, competence or professionalism. Having worked for many years in an editorial team catering for many different audiences, and having my own experience as a translator and editor, I am alert to editorial considerations and can advise on this aspect of a project. I can also bring in other experienced professional editors with whom I have worked regularly.

Picture research

Since long before the advent of web-based archives and search engines, I have regularly carried out picture research for publications, exhibitions and other design projects. I am also used to briefing and commissioning professional picture researchers.

If your project would benefit from being illustrated with photographs, fine art, or other images that can be found in archives or photo libraries, and if they have not already been selected, I can include picture research as part of the design brief. Whenever possible, I try to use the work of individual photographers, or specialist agencies and archives, rather than the big multinational stock empires.
